A true mark of a restaurant’s value and quality is in its staying power.
Without a loyal band of customers, new and old, a restaurant will never last the distance. But, if you can provide customers with exactly what they want and delight them each and every time they step through your door, then through the good times and the hard times they will keep coming back.
Introducing Royal Watan.
Located on Pershore Road, Royal Watan is a true family-run restaurant with a long established history in Birmingham’s Balti beginnings.
We all know that Birmingham isn’t short of a great curry or two, but some of them just linger in your memory a little more than others. We’re truly spoilt for choice in this great city but if there’s somewhere you return to time and again, you just know its a place with that little something extra. Royal Watan is one of those restaurants, where customers keep going back because they know exactly what they’ll get – great service, delicious food and a warm and welcoming smile.
The restaurant was established in 1984 by the current owners’ father and quickly established itself as one of Brum’s best Balti restaurants. The emphasis has always been on good homemade food and after a whopping (and seriously impressive) 40 years in the industry, they still focus on quality fresh ingredients to create the most authentic flavours for their mouth-watering Kashmiri dishes.
Kashmir is known for its Balti style of cooking – meat, seafood or vegetables mixed with select Balti spices and herbs and then cooked and served directly in a cast iron pan (the pan is where the ‘Balti’ gets its name). This style of cooking imparts unique flavours into the dishes. The majority of the main dishes at Royal Watan are cooked in this way (with the exception of some chef specials, secret family recipes, and house specialities) and the extensive menu has plenty of delicious options to choose from.
Alongside the extensive range of Balti dishes (which include but are certainly not limited to Balti Prawn Jalfrezi, Balti Mutton Tikka Rogan Josh, Balti Chicken Tikka Bhuna, Balti Tandoori Chicken Madras, Balti Keema Dhansak, Balti Lamb Karahi, Balti Chicken Korma, Balti Saag Paneer, Balti Aloo Chana and lots, lots more), there are also some delicious and authentic specials to choose from. There’s a good selection of vegetarian options and lots of them can be made vegan too. Plus, if you’re trying not to over-indulge (we get it, all that eating can take its toll) they have some ‘lighter’ options to choose from too.
Chef specials like the Lassawala Gosht are not to be missed. One of their signature dishes, this delicious main features lamb on the bone cooked with herbs and spices from Kashmir using one of their authentic family recipes (from Grandma no less). Full of delicious, aromatic flavours, pair it with one of their mouth-watering naans, rotis or rice for a satisfying meal. Don’t forget to grab some of their yummy starters too like the classic Bhajis, Pakoras, Samosas and more, or go for one of their specials like the Dynamite Prawns (deep fried prawns tossed in a spicy sauce) for something exciting.
For those of you with a sweet tooth, you must try one of their indulgent milkshakes. With flavours such as pistachio mango, chocolate, Lotus Biscoff, Oreo, and Ferrero and Nutella to choose from, you know these creamy, sweet shakes will hit the spot. There are also some truly tasty desserts to enjoy too from loaded brownies to homemade doughnuts and their moreish cookie dough served with vanilla ice cream.
The restaurant itself is a more modern take on a traditional ‘curry house’ with a laid-back but luxury feel. The dark walls and décor add a subtle opulence and atmosphere to this family-run restaurant. With marble-effect tables, ornate pendant lights, plush velvet seating and neon accents all adding to the relaxed glamour.
If you’re looking to indulge in a delicious and authentic Kashmiri feast, then make sure you head over to Royal Watan.
