Birmingham is famous for its canals and one of our favourite ways to enjoy the waterways of Brum is by dining canal-side whenever we get the chance.
There’s something inherently peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable about sitting al fresco and watching the world come and go as boats drift along the canals and joggers, cyclists, walkers and gangs of pugnacious geese pass by on the towpath. It’s almost like passing your time in Venice (but with way more canals…obvi).
Introducing Ciaro Deli.

Located on Gas Street, Ciaro Deli is your first call for an authentic taste of Italy (and epic focaccia sandwiches).
One of the very best places to enjoy the canal-adjacent vibes is the brilliant Ciaro Deli. This fantastic little gem is a haven of all things Italian and offers a truly authentic slice of the med right in the heart of Brum. From their mouth-watering Italian produce to their enormous focaccia sandwiches, you’ll find a true taste of Italy without having to hop on a plane.

At Ciaro Deli, they’re passionate about bringing the very best that Italy has to offer, straight to their customers. They specialise in fresh, flavourful and fully loaded focaccia sandwiches made using their signature hand-baked focaccia (baked fresh every day for the ultimate sandwich). With delicious fillings to choose from such as the Mortadellina (Mortadella, Burrata, Tomato, Pistachio Crumble), the Parma (Prosciutto Crudo di Parma, Parmigiano Reggiano, Rocket, Balsamic Vinegar), the North & South (Spicy Schiacciata, Gorgonzola, Rocket), and a classic Vegetarian (Pesto, Mozzarella, Grilled Vegetables ) and lots more, there are so many tasty options to try and each will leave you satisfied, full and very happy.

As well as these extremely tasty sandwiches, there are a few other light bites to eat too such as Arancini, Aragostine and a daily selection of sweet treats (think Cannoli, Tiramisu, and freshly baked pastries). Plus, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for seasonal specials including their highly popular Porchetta sandwich. We love a good Porchetta and this is one of the best you’ll find this side of Italy – super succulent pork, crispy crackling and buckets of flavour. Served in their freshly baked focaccia this might just be one of the very best sandwiches you can get in Birmingham.

If you fancy a light bite to eat, or a chilled glass of wine, this is the perfect place to go. Whether you grab a coffee and a pastry on your morning stroll, or you pop by in the afternoon for a glass of wine (or maybe even an Aperol Spritz) and some nibbles, this is such a great place to stop at for a quiet moment in your day.

Of course, as the name suggests, Ciaro Deli is also… a deli. So, not only can you grab these delicious sandwiches to eat in or take-away, but you can also pick up some beautiful artisanal produce too. From delectable cheeses to premium cold cuts and cured meats, as well as freshly prepared dishes, this is a great place to stock up on lots of yummy produce, with lots imported directly from the best Italian suppliers. Stop by to peruse the fully stocked counters and take home some delicious speciality items to enjoy later.
Pro tip: they also have a pasta and wine bar next door serving delicious and authentic pasta dishes, so be sure to check them out too!

The interior is laid back and relaxed with lots of little Italian touches including some beautiful Mediterranean tiles and terrazzo style tables. The houseplants and framed photos of staff members give the place a homely and welcoming charm, and the lemons throughout the décor are a nod to their Italian heritage. Overlooking the beautiful Gas Street Basin, when the weather is nice the al fresco tables are the perfect spot for a little bit of people-watching as you enjoy a leisurely bite to eat. If time is of the essence, simply pop in for a sandwich to take away with you instead. The perfect on-the-go snack that will keep you fully fuelled for the rest of the day.
So if you’re looking for a cute little spot for a coffee or a delicious Focaccia sandwich, make sure to stop by Ciaro Deli.
