Birmingham. The Magic City

Birmingham. The Magic City

Product Description

‘Birmingham. The Magic City’ Print by Grand Union and BAZ (Birmingham Art Zine).

A Google search for Birmingham can reveal many things…

Birmingham. The Magic City satirizes clichés of local authority marketing and the trend for cities to build bigger and bolder ‘starchitecture’. BAZ (Birmingham Art Zine) propose a new approach for Birmingham, instigated by a cultural exchange with its American cousin.

Birmingham, Alabama, was founded in 1871 and named in a direct reference to the industrial might of Birmingham, UK. It became known as the ‘Magic City’ because of the rapid growth of its iron and steel industry. The original Magic City sign was erected in 1926 but was dismantled in the mid 1950’s in a state of dis-repair.

BAZ hope to reclaim the sign’s original aspirations and unite all the 31 worldwide ‘Birminghams’ in a celebration of their joint twenty first century ‘Magic-ness’.

BAZ are an art-world think-tank comprising artists Matt Westbrook and Chris Poolman. Based in Birmingham, they are studio holders at Grand Union. Working with a combination of events, performance and writing, BAZ use humour to critique regional art scenes.

These ‘Birmingham. The Magic City’ prints are limited edition and were produced exclusively for Grand Union. They are signed by the artists on Risograph print – unframed.

If you’d like your edition framed please contact Grand Union at for details.
