The British Street Food Awards: The Midland Heats

unnamed

Food, glorious food!

Last year resident street food heroes Digbeth Dining Club hosted the British Street Food Awards at the Rainbow Open Air Arena. And folks, it was a most glorious day out. Those attending got to not only sink their teeth into some of the finest street food from our dearest Brum street food traders, but also try a wonderful array of mouth-watering street food from traders across the country. It was a regular feeding frenzy, and at the end of it all our very own Baked In Brick was crowned the champion of British street food – winning not only ‘Best Main Dish’ but also ‘Best of the Best’.

On Friday 16 and Saturday 17 June 2017, the British Street Food Awards return to Birmingham – but this time it’s the Midland Heats, and your feasting will take place at DDC regular’s foodie hotspot, Spot*light.

The rules are simple: it costs just £2 to attend (with a choice of either Friday or Saturday – or if you’re a legend, both) and then the feeding frenzy begins. Sample dishes from the very best traders from across the Midlands and then vote with your mouth (and by that we mean via the app) on who you think should make it through to the British Street Food Awards finals and represent Birmingham – and that trader could even make it to the European Street Food Awards later in the year, so it’s kind of a big deal.

“Since we started in 2012, we have had a fantastic relationship with the British Street Food Awards winning top event ourselves and getting to host the finals last year. It really has been a sign that Birmingham is a recognised place for some of the best food in the country and across Europe. By bringing the heats back, Brummies get another chance to support the locals and also try amazing street food from across the UK”. – Jack Brabant, founder of Digbeth Dining Club.

In addition to all the street food you could possibly ever fit in your belly, Mama Roux (next door to Spot*light) will have the drinks flowing and the music playing, and Dead Pixels will be there for all your retro gaming needs – making this more of a street food party than a competition. But it is a competition, so make sure you fulfil your civic duty and get down to DDC on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 June to vote on who you think should represent Birmingham’s street food scene at the British Street Food Awards (and possibly at the European Street Food Awards later in the year!).

The list of traders at The Midland Heats over the weekend includes: Baked In Brick, Low ‘N’ Slow, The Calabash Tree, Cake Doctor, The Big Greek Bus, The English Indian, Old Granary Piegori Hereford, Libertine Burger, Mac Daddies, The Middle Feast, Bournville Waffle Co., The Flying Cows, Taste of Persia, Homeboys, Cuepointuk.

We’ll see you all there. Just remember to bring your expandable pants, ok?
