“Sometimes in football you have to score goals.” – Thierry Henry

With food and drink often on our minds here in Birmingham (and who can blame us with an independent foodie scene as vibrant and engaging as ours!), sometimes the really ace cultural happenings in the city get slightly over-looked. To that we say, nay! So we’ve decided to take time out each month to highlight one special and ‘must see’ performance – whether it be a play, stand-up comedy, musical, ballet or something else entirely – taking place in our city so as to inject a little bit more culture into your lives. With that in mind, here’s our IB Cultural Highlight Of The Month.

Introducing: STADIUM.

Whether you’re a fan of the great game or not, football has helped to shape and forge our city – creating both fierce rivalries and fond memories in equal measure. STADIUM is the story of these memories. A collection of real stories as told by Birmingham City and Aston Villa Football Club fans as they share their extraordinary memories and unconditional love for their teams. From relationships made to friendships lost, STADIUM combines the drama of theatre with the thrill of football to create this ‘must watch’ new play.

“Football is a real passion of mine – I’ve been a fan and player since I was six. For me football is a kind of education, it brings people closer together and it’s an experience full of unexpected encounters.  It is sometimes said that football fans are the best audiences, confirmed by an obvious proof of unconditional love for the sport. Stadium will highlight the energy, the commitment, and the beauty that can originate from football.” – Mohamed El Khatib, creator and director of STADIUM.

Exploring football versus theatre, team rivalry, mascots, Brexit and even Peaky Blinders, STADIUM features interviews and insights, music and songs from local personalities and the inspirational characters behind the sport. From a bagpiper who has played at hundreds of matches to local legend and West Bromwich Albion fan Blind Dave Healey; the bride who got married in the colours of her beloved Birmingham City, to the die hard fan who got a Villa club badge tattoo only for his team to reveal a new logo a week later.  Many voices, but with one thing in common –passion for their team.

Whether you’re a diehard bluenose, don the claret and blue or simply watch from the sidelines with no particular club of preference, STADIUM is a ‘must see’ for all football fans and provides a wonderful insight into the lives and tales of Birmingham’s footy fans.
